I have been walking this valley for about fifteen years, and the same moment always brings me back: stepping out of the woods above Frahan and suddenly seeing the river three hundred metres below. I deliberately plan short stages so that we have time to stop there, put down our packs and take in the view. I also like setting off early on the second morning, while mist still fills the valley: for an hour we walk above a white sea, then it suddenly collapses. Beyond that, it is straightforward paths and a good evening meal.
What you will experience
Three days of walking on the heights above the Semois between Bouillon and Frahan, with the river almost always below us. The route follows ridge paths overlooking the meanders: we leave the valley floor as soon as we exit Bouillon, descend to cross the river, then climb again. This constant rise and fall accounts for the elevation gain — around 1,250 metres in total over 47 kilometres — far more than the length of the individual stages might suggest.
The route passes the viewpoints that have made the valley famous: the Tombeau du Géant loop seen from Botassart, the ridge above Poupehan and the Rochehaut viewpoint, where Frahan sits within its meander. Between them are oak- and beech-covered slopes, a few old stone tobacco-drying sheds still standing beside the paths, and mornings when mist hangs over the river until around ten o’clock.
The group is limited to 8 people. Two nights with half board in walkers’ hostels, first in Corbion and then in Rochehaut. Everyone carries their own belongings: there is no luggage transfer on this route, and the stages are planned accordingly.

Required fitness level
You need to be able to walk 14 to 18 km a day, or 5 to 7 hours of actual walking, for three consecutive days with your belongings on your back. The elevation gain comes in short, steep climbs of 150 to 250 metres at a time rather than long, steady slopes. This is what most surprises walkers used to flat terrain. There are no technical difficulties, but there are narrow paths, roots and slippery sections after rain.
Conditions & climate
The Semois valley has a temperate Ardennes climate, with around 1,000 mm of precipitation a year spread throughout the year and no true dry season. In July and August, afternoon temperatures are usually between 18 and 24 °C, while nights on the valley floor fall to 10–12 °C. In April and October, expect more like 10 to 15 °C during the day and mornings close to 5 °C. River mist is common at sunrise from late August to October and generally clears before 10 am. The ridges are regularly 3 to 4 degrees colder than the valley floor, and the wind is noticeably stronger.

Each departure requires a minimum number of participants. It is guaranteed or fully refunded by the announced date for your chosen departure, no later than 7 days before departure. The guide may set an earlier deadline for accommodation.

01
Day 1 — From Bouillon to Corbion via the Tombeau du Géant

Meet at 9.30 am on the Esplanade Godefroid, at the foot of the ramp leading up to Bouillon Castle. We leave town beside the Semois, then begin the first steep climb to the plateau, where the path alternates between forest tracks and open woodland edges. In the early afternoon we stop at Botassart for the view over the Tombeau du Géant meander, when the light falls into the loop. We descend to the river, make one final climb and arrive at the hostel in Corbion around 5 pm.

Day 2 — From Corbion to Rochehaut along the Poupehan ridges

Set off at 8.30 am for the longest stage, with the first few hours often spent in the mist. The path quickly gains the ridge and follows it for several kilometres, opening onto the valley at every flatter section. We descend to the river at Poupehan, pass two old tobacco-drying sheds that are still standing, then begin the final climb to Rochehaut: around 200 metres of ascent in one go. The stage ends at the viewpoint above Frahan, ten minutes from the hostel.

Day 3 — From Rochehaut to Frahan around the meander

A short stage, with our packs ready at the hostel after breakfast. We descend from Rochehaut to the Semois, then climb back to the plateau by the Poupehan slope, which offers another angle on the loop walked the day before. We return to the river along the riverside path and cross the footbridge. The trip ends in Frahan around 3.30 pm. For those who left a car in Rochehaut, the walk back up takes about twenty minutes.

- 01Broken-in, high-cut waterproof hiking boots (worn on at least two previous outings)
- 0230–40 litre backpack with a hip belt, carried by you throughout the three days
- 03Breathable waterproof jacket and a warm layer (fleece or light down jacket)

- 05Capacity to carry at least 1.5 litres of water (bottles or hydration bladder)
- 06Telescopic walking poles, strongly recommended for descents to the river

Recommended
- Pack three layers rather than one thick garment: the ridges are windy, while the valley floor stays damp and close.
- Broken-in, high-cut boots with grippy soles: the descents are over roots and fallen leaves.
- Telescopic walking poles: the links down to the river are short but steep and slippery after rain.
- Keep a waterproof jacket at the top of your pack, even when the day looks set to be fine.
- Long trousers for the riverbanks and woods, where ticks are present from April to October.
- Enough water: there is no water point on the route between Botassart and Corbion.
- A head torch for the dawn start on the second morning if you want to watch the mist lift.
- Light slippers or sandals for the evening at the hostel.
